Elements of Art and Principles of Design in Photography

Elements

Line
The perfect example of line because it shows a painting which uses manual strokes to make.
Shape
In this image you can pick up and visualize many basic shapes in the image such as the triangle at the bottom.
Color
This image represents color for obvious reasons, but for explanation purposes the image shows a nice blend of color for different objects in the image.
Value(Tone)
This image is perfect because it goes from light to dark as you get lower in the image.
Form
This image gives a sense of a 3d  appearance making it a perfect example of form.

Texture

I chose this image because it uses texture to make people look real.

Space

I chose this image for space because the space makes it look like people are on the edge of a cliff.

Principles

Contrast
This is contrast because of the use of red and green which are complementary colors.

Balance
I chose this image for balance because it has two subjects that seem to be about same size.

Emphasis
Emphasis because it has the main subject visible which is the three people.

Unity
This represents Unity because it has a good consistency of subjects that don't compete with the main.

Pattern
I would say this is pattern because of how it reuses the same can over and over.

Movement
This is movement because it has a main line leading you through the image.

Rhythm
This is also a good example of rhythm because of the repetition of people in it.

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this image because many people are getting cut off and can't be seen. The meaning of mergers is that exactly, when objects in the image feel as if they are one.

Framing

I chose this image because the leaves give the image a sense of depth. The leaves and buildings do this by being closer and looking as large as the building.

Balance

I chose this because there are two separate buildings and are well balanced. The reason for this is the fact that they feel as if they weigh the same on both sides.

Lines

I chose this photo because it has lines that follow the man's path as he falls. That is the definition of lines, where they lead to the main subject of the image.

The Rule of Thirds

I chose this because I see the plane as one of the two focuses and it is in the corner and off center. The meaning of this subject is that the image must be off center to give a more natural feel.

Simplicity

The meaning of Simplicity is that the image must not be complicated and just has a simple background. I chose this image because it has a plain and simple background.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

The article was about people constantly using photoshop on images for different reasons. I think that the use of photoshop varies and depends on the change that makes it acceptable or not. If they remove someone then it is unethical but, if it was simply an act of adding something little and is meant to change nothing or offend anyone it is acceptable.

This one is much more acceptable because it only makes it seem like he's debating but, in the actual event he did not.

This one is much less acceptable because it shows people where they weren't to show their diverse school.

Warm Up

It is my favorite because it shows something natural but unique image. The story behind it also caught my attention because it was something that people were happy about because the spiders killed mosquitoes. I think I could take images involving people and places that I find stand out.

Camera Parts

Aperture- In optics it is a hole or opening that light travels through.

Shutter- A device that allow light to pass for a set amount of time.

Exposure- The amount of light allowed to fall on each area of a photographic medium.

Depth of field- The distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear sharp in an image.

F-Stop- The F-Stop is the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil.

Focal length- A measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light.

Power switch- The switch that turns the camera on or off

Setting buttons- Adjust many camera settings

Cross keys- They are the arrow keys of the camera

Menu button- Allows you to access the menu

Shutter button- It releases the shutter of the camera to capture a picture

Camera History

How is the Camera Obscura effect achieved?
In a completely dark room a tiny hole is made in one wall where light is focused projecting the outside scene.

What invention helped a man get a step closer to creating the modern camera?
When Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens perfected the understanding of optics and the process of making high quality glass lenses.

What were the parts of the first modern camera invented by Niepce?
He added film to complete the first camera.

What do modern digital cameras have in common with Niepce's Camera?
Light passes through the lens, into the camera and exposes the film creating a photo.

What do digital cameras use to capture an image?
They replaced old fashioned plastic film with an electronic sensor called a CCD.

What is the difference between the Auto Mode and the Program mode?
Auto mode is completely automatic and Program allows you to just point and shoot with control over flash and other settings.

What is the Portrait mode used for? How does it work?
It is used for portraits and by using the fastest available lens setting to blur the background.

What is the Sports mode used for? (not just sports) How does it work?
It uses the the highest shutter speed in order to to freeze motion.

Why should you do a half press on the trigger button?
It helps when the auto focus is fooled as it will attempt to loch focus on the subject allowing the photographer to freeze the point of focus.

What does this symbol mean?
It means disabled flash mode when there will be no flash.

What does this symbol mean?
It is auto flash mode in which the camera decides if it needs to flash.

How would you use this?
You would use these modes depending on how you want the image to look.

What happens to your photo if there is too much light?
The image will be washed out.

What happens to your photo if there is not enough light?
The image will be too dark.

What is a "stop"?
It is a relative measurement of light and is used in every aspect of photography to represent a relative change in the brightness of light.

How many stops brighter is the new planet if there are two sons instead of one?
It is one stop brighter because double the light is one stop.

How many stops brighter is the new planet if there are four sons instead of two?
It is two stops brighter because it goes by doubles.

What affect does a longer shutter speed of have?
It allows more light in the camera.

What affect does a shorter shutter speed have?
It allows less light in the camera.

What does the aperture control?
It controls the opening in it affecting the amount of light even more.

When adjusting the aperture, how can you increase the amount of light?
By increasing the amount of F-stops increasing the openings allowing more light.

First Photos - Best and Worst

Best Photo

This is my best first picture because he was actually looking at the camera.  Most of them came out in a good quality so it was hard to choose one. This was one of the only one that wasn't a side shot.

Worst Photo

This was my worst photo because it was not center and he was laughing. Although I had no blurred pictures this was the only one that was seemed off a little. This was an interrupted shot when he started laughing.
